View from Malerwinkel on the north bank of the Königssee towards the Archenwand, dated 1828 and on paper, is among Alt's earliest surviving works, made when he was only eighteen years old during a formative tour of the Bavarian Alps near Berchtesgaden. The Königssee — an extraordinarily deep, clear lake surrounded by vertical limestone cliffs — was known as the 'Painter's Corner' (Malerwinkel) from the specific viewpoint Alt chose, a lookout platform designed for landscape artists. The Archenwand, a sheer limestone wall on the lake's eastern shore, presented a subject of sublime Alpine verticality that challenged the young painter to handle extreme tonal contrasts between cliff shadow and water surface. This early work shows Alt already demonstrating the landscape sensitivity that would mature into his celebrated topographic practice.

Paper medium — likely pencil with wash additions — suits the young Alt's technique at eighteen: structural graphite lines establish the Archenwand's vertiginous cliff face, with wash layers adding the tonal depth of shadow zones and the reflective quality of the lake surface. The composition's handling of vertical scale is precociously confident.
