View of Ghent by Augustus Wall Callcott

View of Ghent

Augustus Wall Callcott·1811

Historical Context

View of Ghent from 1811 by Augustus Wall Callcott provides a topographic view of the Flemish city during the Napoleonic period, when Continental travel was beginning to open up again for English artists. Callcott's Continental travels provided subjects that combined topographic interest with the atmospheric landscape painting that was his specialty, and Flemish cities with their historic architecture and waterways offered ideal subject matter. His visit to the Low Countries also deepened his understanding of the Dutch and Flemish landscape traditions he had studied through paintings in English collections. The Manchester Art Gallery holds this work as part of its significant collection of British landscape painting documenting the topographic and atmospheric traditions of the Romantic period.

Technical Analysis

The city view balances architectural specificity with atmospheric landscape treatment, the buildings rendered with precision while the sky and water create atmospheric unity.
