Canaletto's view captures the small mainland town with the same precision he applied to Venice itself, though the open landscape and different quality of mainland light give the painting a distinctly different character. The painting provides rare documentary evidence of Mestre before modern industrialization and urban expansion transformed it into the metropolitan sprawl that now faces Venice.
