View of the Grand Canal and the Salute, Venice
Canaletto·1735
Historical Context
This 1735 view of the Grand Canal and the Salute, now at Villa Necchi Campiglio in Milan, captures Longhena's great votive church in one of Canaletto's most characteristically composed views — the canal stretching toward the church's dome, its Baroque mass filling the horizon while the foreground water surface mirrors the afternoon sky. The Villa Necchi Campiglio, a Rationalist villa built between 1932 and 1935 in central Milan for the Necchi family and now a house museum under the FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano), acquired this Canaletto as part of its important collection of Italian paintings — an unusual domestic context that gives the work a different visual life than the great national galleries where most Canalettos now hang. By 1735, Canaletto had perfected his approach to the Salute view after more than a decade of treating the subject for different collectors: the composition is refined to its essentials, the staffage economical but precise, the atmospheric quality of the light over the canal surface among the most beautifully resolved passages in all his work. The painting documents the continued strength of his commercial production in the mid-1730s, when he was simultaneously preparing the systematic series for Consul Smith that would eventually enter the Royal Collection.
Technical Analysis
The Salute's dome dominates the distant composition while the Grand Canal leads the eye through a corridor of palazzi. The water surface captures complex reflections that unify architecture and sky.
