View of the Piazzetta near the Square of St Mark, Venice by Richard Parkes Bonington

View of the Piazzetta near the Square of St Mark, Venice

Richard Parkes Bonington·1827

Historical Context

View of the Piazzetta near the Square of St Mark, Venice from 1827 is one of Bonington's finest Venetian scenes, painted after his 1826 Italian journey captivated him with the architecture and light of the Adriatic city. The Piazzetta was the ceremonial entrance to Venice from the sea, flanked by the Biblioteca Marciana and the Doge's Palace, and Bonington captures its architectural grandeur with the luminous, atmospheric quality that made his Venetian views influential for subsequent generations. Characteristic of Bonington's approach, the work displays luminous atmospheric color and fresh alla prima technique, with a watercolor-influenced handling of oil paint that gives the architecture an almost shimmering quality. Bonington's death at twenty-five was mourned across Europe as the loss of perhaps the most naturally gifted painter of his generation — Delacroix called him 'a painter in the full force of the term,' while Turner acknowledged the distinctive contribution Bonington made to the depiction of Venice, a subject both artists shared.

Technical Analysis

The monumental architecture is rendered with precise perspective while the atmosphere is conveyed through transparent glazes, creating Bonington's characteristic effect of structures shimmering in warm Venetian light.

  • ◆The two columns of the Piazzetta — one topped by St Theodore, one by the Lion of St Mark — frame the entrance to the Grand Canal with the ceremonial grandeur of a triumphal arch.
  • ◆Bonington captures the particular quality of Venetian light reflecting off the lagoon surface, giving the stone buildings along the quay a warm, water-reflected glow.
  • ◆The gondolas and boats in the foreground are depicted with understanding of their construction — the high prow and stern of the gondola, the specific angle of the felze cabin.
  • ◆The Doge's Palace at the left edge displays specific Gothic arcade details, but Bonington's impressionistic treatment suggests the architecture rather than documents it.
  • ◆The figures on the Piazzetta are rendered as splashes of color against the pale stone — reds, blues, blacks — their dress registering the cosmopolitan character of the Venetian trading republic.
