Marco d'Oggiono, one of Leonardo da Vinci's earliest and most devoted pupils, created this version of the Virgin of the Rocks around 1510. D'Oggiono was instrumental in disseminating Leonardo's compositions and techniques throughout Lombardy, producing numerous copies and variations of the master's works for patrons who could not obtain originals. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.

The panel closely follows Leonardo's compositional prototype while showing d'Oggiono's somewhat harder modeling and less refined sfumato, typical of workshop copies adapting the master's innovations.
