Vittoria Colonna [?] by Sebastiano del Piombo

Vittoria Colonna [?]

Sebastiano del Piombo·1520

Historical Context

This 1520 painting possibly depicting Vittoria Colonna, the celebrated Italian poet and friend of Michelangelo, represents a figure of enormous cultural importance. If the identification is correct, this is one of the few portraits of the woman who was the most admired female literary figure of Renaissance Italy. Sebastiano del Piombo, born Sebastiano Luciani in Venice around 1485 and active in Rome from 1511 until his death in 1547, occupied one of the most interesting positions in sixteenth-century Italian painting: trained in the Venetian tradition under Giorgione and influenced by the young Titian, he subsequently became the closest collaborator of Michelangelo in Rome, receiving figure compositions from the great Florentine that he executed with his Venetian command of color and atmosphere. The resulting fusion — Venetian surface and Roman form — was his most distinctive contribution to the tradition. His appointment as keeper of the Papal Seal (Piombo) in 1531 brought him financial security but somewhat reduced his artistic output in the final decades of his career.

Technical Analysis

The portrait shows Sebastiano's characteristic combination of Venetian warmth and Roman gravity, with a dark, rich palette that emphasizes the sitter's contemplative nobility.

Look Closer

  • ◆The sitter's dress, if this is Vittoria Colonna, is of unusually austere design — few jewels, simple fabric — consistent with the celebrated poet's documented disdain for courtly vanity.
  • ◆Sebastiano del Piombo's use of oil on panel allowed him to build up glazes that create a depth of shadow unlike the more opaque fresco or tempera traditions — the dark background has luminous depth.
  • ◆The hands, if visible, bear the stillness of a person accustomed to contemplation — Sebastiano's portraits reflect his subjects' inner lives through composure rather than activity.
  • ◆The three-quarter pose facing the viewer was Sebastiano's standard portrait format, derived from Venetian convention but given the Roman gravity of his mature style.
  • ◆A trace of Venetian warmth in the skin tone distinguishes Sebastiano's portraits from the cooler Roman manner of Raphael — two different interpretations of Renaissance portraiture existing simultaneously.
