Water reflections at stone coffin

Water Reflections at Stone Coffin, painted in 1887, is a distinctive subject within Zorn's oeuvre: the juxtaposition of an ancient stone sarcophagus or funerary monument with the living movement of water reflections. The combination of archaeological relic and natural phenomenon was typical of Romantic landscape sensibility, in which the past was made poignant by the indifference of natural processes continuing around it. The 1887 date places this among Zorn's European travel works, and the stone coffin may have been encountered in a Mediterranean, North African, or southern European setting consistent with his movements in this period. Water reflections were a technical speciality that Zorn pursued across his entire career — from Venetian lagoon to Dalarnan lake — and the stone coffin provided an unusual anchoring element for a study that might otherwise have been purely abstract in its optical interest.
