Waterloo Bridge, overcast weather by Claude Monet

Waterloo Bridge, overcast weather

Claude Monet·1900

Historical Context

Waterloo Bridge, Overcast Weather from 1900 at the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin represents the London series in Ireland's national modern art institution — the gallery established by the dealer Hugh Lane specifically to create a public collection of modern European art for Ireland. Lane's collecting of French Impressionism in the early twentieth century was among the most visionary in the British Isles, and his bequest to the Hugh Lane Gallery included major works by Monet, Renoir, Degas, and their circle. The overcast weather variant of Waterloo Bridge shows the bridge under the soft diffused light that eliminates strong shadows and gives the stone a silvery, even tone — one of the series' most atmospheric conditions, less dramatic than fog but equally revealing in its tonal subtlety. The Hugh Lane Gallery's French Impressionist holdings, built from Lane's foundational bequest and subsequent acquisitions, make it one of the most important repositories of French modernism in the British Isles, and the Waterloo Bridge canvas is among its most celebrated works.

Technical Analysis

Overcast conditions eliminate the strong tonal contrasts of sunny or foggy variants, requiring Monet to differentiate bridge, water, and sky through subtle hue differences within a compressed tonal range. The bridge and its reflection achieve almost equal weight in the composition — the even light reducing distinctions between solid matter and its aqueous image.

Look Closer

  • ◆The overcast sky creates a milky grey that diffuses all light and eliminates shadows entirely.
  • ◆Grey light reveals color relationships unavailable in direct sunlight, fascinating Monet equally.
  • ◆The bridge's arches under overcast create uniform shadows, tonal contrasts more subtle and massy.
  • ◆The Thames under grey weather has a leaden metallic quality rendered in deep blue-grey.
