Forest. Study

Labelled a study, this work held at the State Art Museum of Altai Krai represents Shishkin's practice of working directly in front of a specific forest motif with the aim of capturing transient light effects — a practice he sustained throughout a career of exceptional length. Studies were taken seriously by Shishkin as independent works of value rather than mere preparatory material. The designation signals directness of observation more than incompleteness of execution. The Altai museum's collection reflects the distribution of Russian landscape painting across provincial institutions during the Soviet era, when many works were dispersed from central collections to regional galleries across the country.

The study format encouraged somewhat freer brushwork than Shishkin permitted himself in exhibition pieces. Paint is applied confidently, with individual tree elements captured with rapid but assured strokes that still carry his characteristic precision.
