Saint Joseph and the Child
Josefa de Óbidos·1670
Historical Context
Josefa de Óbidos was one of the most accomplished painters in 17th-century Portugal, remarkable both for the quality of her work and for the rarity of a woman artist in a professional context in Iberia. Active in Óbidos and Coimbra, she produced devotional paintings and still lifes of exceptional refinement. This 1670 Saint Joseph and the Child reflects the surge of devotion to Joseph that followed his proclamation as patron of the universal church by Gregory XV in 1621.
Technical Analysis
Joseph holds or tends the Christ child in a tender domestic scene that emphasizes the saint's protective paternal role. Josefa's characteristically refined technique — smooth, luminous flesh tones and carefully rendered drapery — gives the devotional subject an intimate, almost miniaturist quality.
