Nuno Gonçalves's Saint Vincent Tied to a Column, painted around 1470 and now in the National Museum of Ancient Art, Lisbon, is by the most important Portuguese painter of the 15th century. Gonçalves served as court painter to King Afonso V of Portugal and is best known for the monumental Saint Vincent Panels, the masterpiece of Portuguese Renaissance painting.
