Scenes of the legend of Saint Michael
Historical Context
Miguel Alcañiz the Elder's Scenes of the Legend of Saint Michael of 1421 depicts episodes from the archangel's three major apparitions: at Monte Gargano in Puglia (490), at Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy (708), and his local Spanish manifestations. The cult of Michael was exceptionally strong in the Crown of Aragon, where Alcañiz was working in Valencia's thriving altarpiece production culture. Michael as military defender against demons had particular resonance in Reconquista Spain, where spiritual and military warfare were intertwined in both theology and daily life.
Technical Analysis
The narrative cycle of Michael's apparitions requires depicting the archangel in multiple contexts: the grotto at Gargano, the coastal mount in Normandy, combat with the dragon. Alcañiz's International Gothic style manages these varied settings through landscape vignettes that use selective gold ground and naturalistic terrain to move between heavenly and earthly zones.
