Christ Carrying the Cross by Master of the Small Passion

Christ Carrying the Cross

Master of the Small Passion·1450

Historical Context

Christ Carrying the Cross, from the Master of the Small Passion's Karlsruhe cycle and dated around 1450, shows the Via Crucis episode in which Christ bears the cross toward Golgotha, the crowd pressing around him. The Small Passion cycle at the Kunsthalle Karlsruhe preserves multiple panels from this Upper Rhine workshop, documenting a provincial tradition of Passion narrative painting that diffused Flemish naturalistic innovations through the Rhine valley networks connecting Cologne, Strasbourg, and Basel. The carrying of the cross was among the most widely depicted Passion episodes, its procession format allowing crowds and architectural settings.

Technical Analysis

Tempera on panel. The crowd surrounding Christ creates compositional density that conveys the chaos of the Via Crucis without requiring elaborate spatial construction. The cross itself bisects the picture diagonally, a structural device that generates visual dynamism and reinforces the narrative burden being carried.
