Anbetung des Kindes, verso: Verkündigung an Maria, Himmelfahrt Christi
Ulrich Apt the Elder·1510
Historical Context
Ulrich Apt the Elder's Anbetung des Kindes (Adoration of the Child), with the Annunciation and Ascension on the verso, painted around 1510 and now at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, is a work by one of the leading painters of Augsburg during the period when that city was among the most culturally dynamic in the German-speaking world. Apt, who worked for Emperor Maximilian I alongside Hans Burgkmair and Leonhard Beck, produced devotional works that combine German Late Gothic formal conventions with the Renaissance influence flowing into Augsburg through its trade connections with Venice and northern Italy. The double-sided format suggests use as a portable altarpiece or processional panel.
Technical Analysis
Apt's Augsburg training produces a refined, somewhat Italianate quality in the figure types and compositional organization of the Adoration scene. The luminous light radiating from the Christ child in this nocturnal devotional scene reflects northern European innovation in depicting the miraculous nativity light.
