Ungleiches Liebespaar
Hans Baldung Grien·1528
Historical Context
Baldung's Ungleiches Liebespaar (Unequal Lovers) from 1528 is a moralizing genre subject depicting the grotesque pairing of an old man or woman with a young lover, a theme warning against the foolishness of age pursuing youth and the danger of being deceived by mercenary affection. The unequal lovers subject was popular in German and Netherlandish painting from the early sixteenth century onward, combining moralizing content with the opportunity for psychological observation of the comic and pathetic dynamics of inappropriate desire. Baldung's version brings his characteristic psychological intensity and expressive distortion to the subject, creating an image that is simultaneously morally instructive and visually disturbing. The 1528 date places this in his mature Strasbourg period, when his workshop was producing a wide range of secular and devotional subjects for the Upper Rhine market.
Technical Analysis
The contrasting figures create a visual commentary on aging and desire, rendered with Baldung's typically bold draftsmanship and vivid characterization.
