Kreuzigung Christi
Historical Context
Hans Leonhard Schäufelein painted this Crucifixion around 1515 while working as Nördlingen's leading painter. Crucifixion scenes formed the centerpiece of most German altarpiece programs, and Schäufelein's versions combined the compositional lessons learned in Dürer's workshop with his own more emotional, broadly painted approach. Trained under Dürer in Nuremberg and having contributed to the Heller Altarpiece and other major projects, Schäufelein brought technical sophistication to provincial patrons. His altarpieces in Swabia and Bavaria demonstrate how Dürer's innovations were transmitted to German parish churches across the region, transforming local devotional painting through the influence of Nuremberg's greatest master.
Technical Analysis
The panel shows Schäufelein's mature technique with broader handling than his early Düreresque work, using dramatic lighting and expressive gesture to convey the Crucifixion's emotional weight.
