Mosque of Omar in Jerusalem. From the journey to Palestine
Jan Ciągliński·1901
Historical Context
Mosque of Omar in Jerusalem. From the Journey to Palestine shows the Dome of the Rock — the seventh-century Islamic shrine built on the Temple Mount, commonly but incorrectly referred to by European travelers as the 'Mosque of Omar.' The Dome of the Rock, with its brilliant golden dome visible from all over Jerusalem, was one of the most painted and photographed sites in the city. Ciągliński's study joins a vast tradition of European representations of this Islamic sacred monument seen from a Christian and secular perspective.
Technical Analysis
The dome's golden surface creates a luminous focal point against the pale Jerusalem sky. Ciągliński renders the octagonal base and dome in warm golds and creams, contrasting with the cooler stone of the surrounding Temple Mount platform. The composition is direct and architectural.
