Lake Tiberias. From the journey to Palestine
Jan Ciągliński·1901
Historical Context
Lake Tiberias — the Sea of Galilee — is one of the most scripturally significant bodies of water in the Christian tradition, the setting of numerous Gospel episodes and the site of Jesus's ministry. Ciągliński's 1901 view of the lake participates in a long tradition of artists and pilgrims seeking to record the actual physical landscape of the New Testament. What distinguishes his approach from earlier Romantic treatments is the frankly atmospheric, Post-Impressionist handling: the lake is treated as a problem of light and water rather than primarily as a devotional subject. The painting now allows viewers to see how the lake appeared before twentieth-century development transformed its shoreline substantially.
Technical Analysis
Horizontal bands of water and sky are treated with broken, shimmering strokes that dissolve precise edge into atmosphere. The color scheme of blues, greens, and pale silvers creates a cool luminosity distinct from the warmer tones of Ciągliński's desert and townscape subjects elsewhere in the series.
