The Sea of Galilee. From the journey to Palestine
Jan Ciągliński·1903
Historical Context
The Sea of Galilee. From the Journey to Palestine is from Ciągliński's earlier travel series — his 1901 visit to Palestine preceded the Egyptian journey of 1903. The Sea of Galilee (Lake Tiberias) is a freshwater lake in northern Israel that carries profound religious significance for Christians as the site of many events in the Gospel narratives. Ciągliński's approach to the subject is painterly rather than devotional — the lake as a phenomenon of light and water rather than a pilgrimage destination. The National Museum in Warsaw holds this alongside the Egyptian series.
Technical Analysis
The lake is treated as an expansive water surface reflecting sky and light. Ciągliński applies horizontal strokes across the water to capture reflection and movement. The palette is lighter and cooler than the Egyptian canvases, suited to the different quality of Palestinian light.
