Two statues. From the journey to Egypt
Jan Ciągliński·1903
Historical Context
Two Statues. From the Journey to Egypt shows a pair of ancient Egyptian monumental sculptures — possibly the Colossi of Memnon on the West Bank at Luxor, two massive seated statues of Amenhotep III that stand isolated in the fields. These were among the most famous monuments in Egypt, celebrated since antiquity for the sound they were said to emit at dawn. Ciągliński's choice to paint them as a paired subject creates a natural compositional structure: two identical forms side by side, massive and isolated in the landscape.
Technical Analysis
The two statues create a bilateral symmetry that dominates the composition. Ciągliński renders the warm stone forms against a bright sky, with the desert floor spreading in ochre below. The monumental scale is conveyed through simplified mass and strong tonal contrast.
