Study for the Horse of Grand Duke of Lithuania Vytautas for the Painting "The Battle of Grunwald"

Jan Matejko was Poland's greatest history painter, whose monumental canvases depicting key moments in Polish history served as acts of national memory-keeping during the partitions that had erased Poland from the map of Europe. The Battle of Grunwald (1410) — in which a Polish-Lithuanian coalition defeated the Teutonic Knights — was one of his major subjects, the painting completed in 1878 becoming Poland's most celebrated historical painting. This 1876 study of a horse for the painting of Grand Duke Vytautas documents his meticulous preparation for such works. The National Museum in Kraków holds these studies as documents of his working method, which combined archival research with direct observation.

The horse study is an exercise in accurate animal observation in preparation for the larger compositional work. Matejko's attention to the animal's musculature, movement, and equine character is primarily documentary and compositional — establishing the specific horse that will appear in the Battle of Grunwald.
