Karton do polichromii Kościoła Mariackiego - Postać anioła grającego na flecie
Jan Matejko·1889
Historical Context
Matejko's cartoon of an angel playing the flute is one of many preparatory studies for his decoration of St. Mary's Basilica in Kraków. The polychrome project transformed the entire interior of this fourteenth-century Gothic church, providing Matejko an opportunity to synthesize his mastery of historical style with religious iconography. Musical angels were a standard element of Gothic and Renaissance church decoration, and Matejko grounded his figures in medieval prototypes while giving them the physiognomic specificity characteristic of his portraiture.
Technical Analysis
The angel figure is developed in warm ochres and white highlights, with the drapery handled in a stylized Gothic manner appropriate to a church interior. The flute-playing gesture is clearly delineated, the face given more individualized attention than the costume. Handling is precise and controlled.
