Boats-under-construction
Berthe Morisot·1874
Historical Context
Morisot began this view of boats under construction in 1874, the year of the first Impressionist exhibition in which she participated with nine works. The subject — the working waterfront rather than leisured boating — is slightly atypical for her and reflects the breadth of observation she brought to seascape subjects. Boats in various states of construction or repair appear in the Normandy and Brittany harbours she visited during summer travel. The unfinished boats and exposed structural timbers give this canvas an unusual industrial quality alongside its atmospheric rendering of light on water.
Technical Analysis
The composition divides between the dry-dock foreground in ochres and warm browns, and the watery distance behind it. Morisot applies paint with short, energetic strokes throughout, creating a texture suggesting the physical roughness of boatyard materials alongside the shimmer of water beyond.
