The Triumph of Marcus Furius Camillus by Apollonio di Giovanni

The Triumph of Marcus Furius Camillus

Apollonio di Giovanni·1500

Historical Context

Apollonio di Giovanni operated one of the most productive cassone painting workshops in mid-fifteenth-century Florence. This Triumph of Marcus Furius Camillus, painted around 1500, depicts the legendary Roman general's triumphal return, a subject drawn from Livy that resonated with Florentine civic ideals of republican virtue and military glory. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.

Technical Analysis

The panel features the processional frieze composition typical of cassone painting, with figures arranged in a lateral movement across a shallow stage. Rich decorative detail and bright tempera colors characterize the workshop's distinctive narrative style.
