Retablo with Scenes from the Life of the Virgin - The Crucifixion

Pere Espallargues created this work around 1490 during the High Renaissance period. The painting reflects the artistic traditions of its time and place, contributing to the rich tapestry of European painting that characterized the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. The tempera-on-panel medium required a carefully gessoed surface and was painted in fine, precise layers, yielding a luminous, jewel-like surface of great durability.
