Reclining Male Nude (Nicola D'Inverno)
John Singer Sargent·1902
Historical Context
Sargent's 1902 reclining nude of Nicola d'Inverno — his personal servant of many years and, it is now recognized, a figure of deep personal importance to him — is among the most charged of his male nude studies. D'Inverno accompanied Sargent as his valet and studio assistant from the 1890s onward, and his repeated appearance as Sargent's model for male nude studies gives these works a personal dimension that distinguishes them from purely formal exercises. The Harvard Art Museums' collection of these works allows scholars to study the full range of Sargent's engagement with the male figure in a single institutional context.
Technical Analysis
The reclining figure of d'Inverno is rendered with the loaded, fluid brushwork that makes Sargent's male nudes technically exceptional. The play of studio light on the recumbent body — the way warm light models the torso's contours against the shadow-filled drapery beneath — is achieved with a seemingly effortless but technically demanding directness.
