An Idyll: Daphnis and Chloe
Niccolò Pisano·1501
Historical Context
Niccolò Pisano painted this idyllic scene of Daphnis and Chloe around 1501 in Florence. The ancient pastoral romance by Longus was rediscovered during the Renaissance and inspired literary and artistic adaptations. The subject reflects the humanist culture of Florentine collectors. The tempera-on-panel medium required a carefully gessoed surface and was painted in fine, precise layers, yielding a luminous, jewel-like surface of great durability.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with the pastoral landscape setting and idealized figures appropriate to this classical literary subject. The Florentine technique combines narrative clarity with decorative refinement.
