The Last Supper (Lorenzo Monaco, 1389 - 1390)
Lorenzo Monaco·1380
Historical Context
Lorenzo Monaco's Last Supper (c. 1389-1390) is an early work by the Camaldolese monk-painter who would become Florence's greatest Gothic master. Painted while Lorenzo was still developing his distinctive style at the monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli, this panel shows the influence of his training under Agnolo Gaddi alongside emerging personal qualities of lyrical grace. The work entered the Solly Collection, one of the founding collections of the Berlin museums.
Technical Analysis
Tempera and gold on panel. The composition arranges the apostles around a rectilinear table in the traditional Trecento format, with Lorenzo's early style showing firm Giottesque modeling that would later give way to his more fluid, decorative mature manner.
