Jan Baegert painted this Risen Christ Among the Disciples around 1505 in Wesel. Baegert continued the family painting tradition on the Lower Rhine, producing altarpiece cycles for local churches. The post-Resurrection appearance of Christ to his disciples was a joyful scene concluding the Passion narrative. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
