Bust of the Virgin by Pontormo

Bust of the Virgin

Pontormo·c. 1526

Historical Context

This Bust of the Virgin by Pontormo, held at the Fogg Museum at Harvard University, is a devotional painting dating to around 1526-1528. The intimate bust-length format was designed for private devotion, allowing for a close, personal encounter between the viewer and the sacred figure. Pontormo's treatment of the Virgin during this period reflects his most intensely personal engagement with religious subject matter, following his work on the revolutionary Capponi Chapel Deposition (1525-1528) in Santa Felicita, Florence.

Technical Analysis

The bust format concentrates attention on the Virgin's face and expression, which Pontormo renders with his characteristic emotional sensitivity. The soft, luminous flesh tones and the gentle sfumato around the features show the influence of Leonardo and Andrea del Sarto, but the underlying emotional intensity is distinctly Pontormo's own.
