The Virgin and Child with Two Angels
Historical Context
Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio painted this Virgin and Child with Two Angels around 1512, a devotional composition in the tradition of his father Domenico's workshop. Ridolfo adapted the Ghirlandaio family's clear, luminous style to absorb influences from his contemporaries Fra Bartolomeo and Raphael. The tempera-on-panel medium required a carefully gessoed surface and was painted in fine, precise layers, yielding a luminous, jewel-like surface of great durability.
Technical Analysis
The panel demonstrates Ridolfo's characteristic clarity with warm Florentine palette, soft modeling, and the gentle expressions that marked his synthesis of the Ghirlandaio tradition with High Renaissance ideals.
