Saint Jerome in his Study by Matteo di Giovanni

Saint Jerome in his Study

Matteo di Giovanni·1482

Historical Context

Matteo di Giovanni, Siena's leading painter, depicted Saint Jerome in his Study around 1482. The scholarly saint in his study was a subject that combined devotional imagery with humanist interest in learning and classical letters. Matteo's treatment shows the Sienese capacity for detailed interior scenes alongside the more dramatic narratives for which he is best known. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.

Technical Analysis

Tempera on panel with detailed rendering of the study interior and its scholarly furnishings. Matteo's characteristic bold drawing is applied here to the quieter subject of intellectual contemplation.
