Virgin Enthroned with Angels
Spinello Aretino·1380
Historical Context
Spinello Aretino, born in Arezzo and active across Tuscany, was one of the most prolific and accomplished painters of the late Trecento, bridging the Giottesque tradition with the emerging International Gothic style. This Virgin Enthroned with Angels belongs to the long tradition of Maestà imagery central to Italian devotional practice, in which the Madonna is presented as Queen of Heaven surrounded by a celestial court. The painting reflects Spinello's confident synthesis of monumental Florentine figure style with decorative richness.
Technical Analysis
Executed in egg tempera on gold-ground panel, the composition employs a symmetrical arrangement of angels flanking the central throne, a format derived from Giotto's and Duccio's monumental Maestà paintings. Spinello's modeling of the Virgin's mantle shows his characteristic bold chiaroscuro and rich ultramarine blue pigment.
