Un chevalier de l'ordre de saint Michel
Historical Context
This 1687 portrait of a Knight of the Order of Saint Michael — one of France's oldest chivalric orders, founded by Louis XI in 1469 — belongs to the genre of official honor portraits that formed a large part of Largillière's court production. The Order of Saint Michael, though superseded in prestige by the Order of the Holy Spirit, remained a coveted distinction for French noblemen. Largillière conveys rank through costume, bearing, and the chain of the order.
Technical Analysis
The knight is shown in formal three-quarter length, the distinctive collar of Saint Michael prominent across his chest. Largillière's brushwork is confident and free in the costume while more precise in the face, a technical balance typical of his best portrait work.
