Joseph Bonaparte (1768–1844), King of Spain

This 1810 portrait of Joseph Bonaparte as King of Spain at the Wellington Collection documents Napoleon’s eldest brother in his brief and troubled Spanish kingship (1808–1813). Joseph’s unpopular reign provoked the devastating Peninsular War, and his portrait by Gérard captures the reluctant monarch imposed by Napoleonic imperialism. Characteristic of the artist's mature approach, the work displays polished Neoclassical finish inherited from David, with a more flattering and commercially appealing elegance that prioritized graceful presentation over moral severity.
