Portrait du duc d'Orléans (Louis-Philippe)
Horace Vernet·1818
Historical Context
Portrait of the Duke of Orleans (Louis-Philippe) from 1818 at the Conde Museum shows the future king before his accession. Vernet maintained close ties with the Orleans family that would serve him well when Louis-Philippe became king in 1830. Horace Vernet's fluent oil technique allowed rapid execution of large-scale battle scenes and Orientalist compositions with a journalistic immediacy that his contemporaries found both exciting and, to some academic critics, superficial.
Technical Analysis
The formal portrait presents the duke with aristocratic bearing. Vernet's polished handling creates an image of princely authority.
