Virgin and Child with Saint Barbara, Saint John the Baptist and a female donor
Jacopo de' Barbari·1498
Historical Context
Jacopo de' Barbari, a Venetian painter and printmaker who also worked at German and Netherlandish courts, painted this Virgin and Child with Saints Barbara and John the Baptist around 1498. De' Barbari is best known for his monumental bird's-eye view of Venice, but his paintings reveal a distinctive synthesis of Venetian coloring with Northern European precision. The oil medium allowed for rich tonal transitions and glazed layers of color that created luminous depth impossible with the older tempera technique.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel combining Venetian luminous palette with Northern precision in detail. The female donor's inclusion reflects standard devotional portrait conventions.
