Christ on the Cross, mourned by the three Marys, John and a donor
Historical Context
Pier Francesco Sacchi painted this Christ on the Cross with mourners and a donor around 1514. Sacchi's Crucifixion compositions served the devotional needs of individual patrons who wished to be depicted in perpetual prayer before the cross, a format common across Italian altarpiece commissions. The tempera-on-panel medium required a carefully gessoed surface and was painted in fine, precise layers, yielding a luminous, jewel-like surface of great durability.
Technical Analysis
The panel demonstrates Sacchi's solid technique with careful rendering of the donor portrait alongside the devotional scene, combining the precision required for portraiture with the emotional gravity of the Crucifixion.
