The Virgin and Child Enthroned with Saints
Giovanni Santi·1480
Historical Context
Giovanni Santi, father of Raphael and court painter at Urbino, created this Virgin and Child Enthroned with Saints around 1480. Santi's altarpieces for churches in the Marches and Umbria demonstrate a solid command of contemporary painting that would provide the foundation for his son's extraordinary genius. His sacra conversazione compositions show the influence of both Melozzo da Forlì and the Umbrian school.
Technical Analysis
Oil on panel with clear spatial construction and dignified figure arrangement. The enthroned Madonna surrounded by saints shows the Urbino-influenced spatial clarity that Santi absorbed from the court of Federico da Montefeltro.
