The saints Sebastian and Christopher
Lorenzo Lotto·1531
Historical Context
This combined depiction of Saints Sebastian and Christopher, also at Berlin's Gemäldegalerie and dated 1531, may be the original unified composition from which the individual panels were separated. Pairing protector saints was common in altarpiece design, giving worshippers multiple intercessors to invoke for different needs. Characteristic of the artist's mature approach, the work displays nervous, charged atmosphere in portraits, symbolic objects placed with enigmatic purpose, eclectic absorption of influences from Germany, Raphael, and Giorgione, restless spatial invention.
Technical Analysis
The juxtaposition of the two saints creates a visual dialogue between suffering and strength, with Lotto's vigorous brushwork and rich Venetian coloring unifying the contrasting figures.
