Saint Vincent Ferrer by Domenico Ghirlandaio

Saint Vincent Ferrer

Domenico Ghirlandaio·1494

Historical Context

Domenico Ghirlandaio painted this Saint Vincent Ferrer around 1494, depicting the Dominican preacher canonized in 1455 who was widely venerated for his fiery calls to repentance. Vincent was a particularly appropriate saint for late 15th-century Florence, where the atmosphere of religious crisis — anticipating Savonarola's rise — made penitential figures newly relevant. Ghirlandaio's characterization combines the formal dignity of ecclesiastical portraiture with psychological presence. His ability to create convincing individual characterizations within the conventions of devotional iconography made him the preferred painter of Florence's elite. The Dominicans at Santa Maria Novella, with whom Ghirlandaio had a longstanding relationship through major fresco commissions, may have been involved in commissioning this work.

Technical Analysis

Tempera on panel with Ghirlandaio's characteristic clear drawing and naturalistic rendering of the Dominican saint. The preacher's animated gesture suggests his fame as an orator.
