Mary enthroned with the child, two angels and two saints
Historical Context
Raffaellino del Garbo painted this enthroned Mary with the child, two angels, and two saints around 1490. Working in Florence during the height of the Renaissance, Raffaellino produced altarpieces that combined the grace of his teacher Filippino Lippi with elements from Perugino and other central Italian masters. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.
Technical Analysis
Tempera on panel with the graceful figure style derived from Filippino Lippi. The symmetrical composition and luminous coloring demonstrate Raffaellino's competent handling of the standard altarpiece format.
