Mary adoring the child
Lorenzo di Credi·1490
Historical Context
Lorenzo di Credi painted this Mary adoring the Child around 1490, now at the Gemäldegalerie Berlin, during his mature period as the heir to Verrocchio's Florentine workshop. Credi trained alongside Leonardo da Vinci in the 1470s and absorbed Verrocchio's emphasis on technical precision and careful anatomical study. Unlike Leonardo, who abandoned the careful Verrocchio manner for his revolutionary sfumato, Credi maintained and perfected his teacher's approach, producing works of exceptional surface finish. The devotional subject — the Virgin kneeling before the newborn Christ in an attitude of worship — was a Florentine specialty that Credi repeated in numerous variations for the private devotional market, each version slightly adjusted in compositional detail.
Technical Analysis
