Thronende Maria mit dem Kind und vier Heiligen
Historical Context
This enthroned Virgin and Child with four saints is attributed to the Master of the Palazzo Venezia Madonna, an anonymous Italian painter active in Rome during the 1330s-1340s. The work reflects the continuation of panel painting traditions in Rome during a period when the papacy's absence in Avignon (1309-1377) diminished but did not extinguish artistic production in the Eternal City, where local painters synthesized Roman, Florentine, and Sienese influences.
Technical Analysis
Executed in egg tempera and gold leaf on panel, the composition arranges the sacra conversazione with the enthroned Virgin flanked symmetrically by standing saints. The figure style blends elements from the Roman painting tradition with Giottesque volume and Sienese decorative elegance.
