Christ Carrying the Cross

Marco Palmezzano, a faithful follower of Melozzo da Forlì, painted this Christ Carrying the Cross around 1503 for the Gemäldegalerie Berlin. Active in Forlì in the Romagna region, Palmezzano perpetuated Melozzo's monumental style well into the sixteenth century, producing numerous altarpieces and devotional panels for churches across the Romagna. The tempera medium required careful preparation on a gessoed panel and a disciplined layering technique that produced precise, durable surfaces suited to the intricate detail expected of devotional painting.

The panel demonstrates Palmezzano's solid volumetric modeling and clear coloring derived from Melozzo, with the carefully constructed spatial setting and firm figure drawing that characterize his reliable if conservative approach.
