Die Verkündigung an Maria und sechs Heilige
Lippo Memmi·1340
Historical Context
This Annunciation with six saints by Lippo Memmi represents one of the most important subjects in Gothic art — the moment when the angel Gabriel announces to the Virgin Mary that she will bear the Son of God. Painted around 1340, it reflects Memmi's mature style as one of the leading painters of the Sienese school. Memmi's close collaboration with his brother-in-law Simone Martini profoundly shaped his elegant, courtly approach, making him one of the key transmitters of the Sienese Gothic style.
Technical Analysis
Executed in egg tempera and extensive gold leaf on panel, the work features the refined linear elegance characteristic of the Sienese school. The flanking saints are arranged in a symmetrical composition with elaborately tooled gold halos, and the figures display the elongated proportions and graceful poses favored by Memmi and his circle.
