Virgin and Child
Historical Context
Giovanni Agostino da Lodi painted this Virgin and Child around 1502 for the Gemäldegalerie Berlin. Working in the Lombard tradition influenced by Leonardo da Vinci, da Lodi produced devotional panels that brought Leonardesque softness to traditional Marian imagery. This work falls in the decades immediately around 1500, when Renaissance ideals of harmony and classical order were being synthesised across Europe.
Technical Analysis
The panel shows Leonardesque influence in the soft atmospheric modeling and warm tonal transitions, combining the master's sfumato technique with the clearer drawing of the provincial Lombard tradition.
