The Judgment of Solomon

Jan Rombouts I created this work around 1528 during the High Renaissance period. The painting reflects the artistic traditions and cultural preoccupations of its time and place of origin. The painting is in the Gemäldegalerie Berlin. Old Testament subjects in Renaissance painting served a dual purpose: providing moral exempla for educated patrons while permitting painters to display compositional invention and figure types — including the female nude — within a scripturally sanctioned framework.
