Apostle St. James the Elder and Philip the Apostle
Ugolino di Nerio·1325
Historical Context
Ugolino di Nerio's Saints James the Elder and Philip the Apostle belong to his polyptych series of apostle panels, presenting the brothers of the apostolic college who spread Christianity throughout the Mediterranean world. James the Elder, patron of Spain and the pilgrim road to Santiago de Compostela, and Philip, the apostle whose questioning prompted Christ's discourse on the Bread of Life, were important figures in both devotional and pilgrimage culture. Ugolino's treatment maintains the Duccesque gold background while giving each apostle sufficient individual characterization to distinguish their personalities within the polyptych program.
Technical Analysis
Painted in egg tempera on gold ground, the two apostles are rendered in Ugolino's characteristically graceful style with elongated proportions and carefully modulated drapery. The paired composition within a single compartment creates a dignified dialogue between the figures against the luminous gold backdrop.
